Trussed up like pigs with lengths of rope, Aisling and Annabelle were marched to the main deck to where the other prisoners were assembled. Pirates moved throughout the ship, hunting for anything of value that they might plunder. Aisling’s heart fell as she saw them bring up the heavy chest which contained the Scepter of Concordance. Although she was gladdened by the difficulty they seemed to be having with the lock, she knew that given enough time and perhaps enough gunpowder, they would be able to break into the chest and get at the prize within.

Aisling felt dejected. Her first mission as a ranger, her first time outside of Bromelion, and she had failed spectacularly. At least the princess is unharmed, she thought as she looked at Annabelle standing beside her. She was defiant and beautiful even in the face of defeat, and the ranger felt her admiration for the woman grow.

The pirate captain ordered all of the prisoners into a row, walking up and down the ragged line, inspecting each in turn. When she came to Aisling her eyes widened in surprise, taking in the finely made leather bodice and skirt the elf wore. The garment was beautiful, with intricate, decorative patterns of leaves and vines tooled into the leather.

The captain reached out to touch the point of one of Aisling’s ears, and the ranger fought the urge to spit in her face. She didn’t think it would be wise to antagonize the woman in front of her piratical crew.

The elf didn’t like the cruel glint in the human woman’s eyes.

“My my, what an unexpected bit of booty we have here,” the woman said. “It seems like a windfall has fallen into our lap, doesn’t it boys?” Her words brought chuckles and cruel jeers from the nearby pirates.

“Oh, we’re going to have fun with you,” she promised Aisling, then turned to look at Annabelle.

“And by the Thunderfather, what do we have here? Another pretty little toy for my boys to play with?” The pirate captain paused for a moment, a thoughtful look on her face. “But why does this particular toy look so familiar?” she wondered aloud.

Annabelle took a steadying breath before responding.

“I am Annabelle de Nallare, Crown Princess of Divony and heir to the kingdom, after my brother. This is my ship, the Sea Cat, and we are engaged in a diplomatic mission with the elves of Bromelion.

Mark my words, if any more of my people come to harm, then the full might of my nation will fall down upon you. There won’t be a patch of the sea you can scurry to that will hide you, or your ship from my wrath.”

Aisling had to admit that Annabelle was no coward. The princess faced down the pirate captain unflinchingly, however, Aisling feared what Lizzie the Devil might do to her in reprisal for being spoken to in such a way. The pirate crew was jeering even louder, calling on their captain to teach the insolent redhead a lesson.
